iCivics: Sandra Day O’Connor’s Vision for Citizenship

iCivics is the suite of games Sandra Day O’Connor, working with James Gee, has sponsored in order to try and inspire a generation of students about how America works. It’s one of the most high-profile educational games out there, and one that therefore bears careful scrutiny as a model.

So I would like to put out a call to CUNY Game Networks members: follow the link above, play a few of the games, and tell us what you think in the comments section.

I have a few ideas of my own, but I’ll keep mum for now. For now….

  1. I use these games in my third grade classroom of twenty five students. This is the second year in a row of using iCivics and students are engaged, active and are taking their learning beyond the classroom into action. After realizing that ours was a rare classroom to have functioning computers that students can use to learn Reading, Math, etc., Nintend DS’ with games and Digital Voice Recorders to build reading fluency, they wrote a petition to make it a law that all classrooms should have technology that children can use (in other words – not Smartboards). This was featured in a TV news video that can be seen at http://sites.google.com/site/teamdrillhead
