“Teachers of New York City” is superhero game for Apple devices where educators don masks and capes to battle “school closings, educational programs being cut, and teachers across the United States being laid off due to massive budget deficits.” What a great idea! In the recent article “Critical Gaming Pedagogy,” Francesco Crocco (that’s me) explains that game-based learning can be used to reproduce existing social conditions, what he calls “gaming-to-work,” or to foster critical thinking about education and society. As an example of Critical Gaming, he provides a review of his use of a modified version of Monopoly to teach the inequalities and effects of social class.
